There is a great tradition in literature of the unreliable narrator. Having an unreliable narrator adds a degree of difficulty to understanding the story when you realize the narrator may have an agenda, may not be sane, or may intentionally try to deceive you.
You can never be sure you can trust a first-person narrator.
Why should you treat storytellers in real life any differently?
