Black Hat: “Did you hear of reforms the Duke proposed?”
Brown Hat: “Nay. What sayeth he?”
Black Hat: “We are to own parcels of land, and may sell our excess grain and labor in the market.”
Brown Hat: “Whatever is a market?”
Black Hat: “I am not certain. I think it is a place where we peasants gather to sell our grain, livestock, and services.”
Brown Hat: “I cannot believe my ears. “
Black Hat: “Yes. It is a glorious time. The rights the King and the Duke are granting us are unprecedented. I have even heard the law is being drafted to codify these rights, sanctifying our ownership of the land and rights as citizens.”
Brown Hat: “It is truly amazing. Surely our children and descendants will enjoy even greater rights. Until one day, in the distant future, all men will be seen as equal to each other.”
Black Hat: “ Yes, perhaps for a short time. But then the King and his Lords will surely recoil at being considered our equals. They will consider their loss of station and will look to subjugate us again.”
Brown Hat: “Yes, that makes sense. How long do you think our descendants will enjoy such equality before the King and Dukes come to their senses?”
Black Hat: “A few years maybe.”
Brown Hat: “Yes, that sounds quite reasonable.”
