I think you tell them, but I'm sure some people will see it that way. Capitalism will keep chugging a long for a while and the transition to something new will not happen on a specific date so the when do we say "we are a post-growth economy now"? (or whatever replaces capitalism). I don't think that is too important. Build something better that serves people better, and let other people fight over what it is called. Historians will make those determinations a long time from now. I'm not worried about it.
Your sustainability comparison is spot on. Degrowth needs its ESG moment to go mainstream and to have that we need to stay far away from purity tests.
