It's sad that money is the global measure for everything economic, but given that we're stuck with it for the time being, I think we desperately need a "carbon coin" that is not used for cap-and-trade (i.e. pay-to-pollute), but is a debt-free fiat currency for doing direct work to prevent to prevent climate ruin (total material footprint of the activity must be less than the material/ecological savings). Preserving forest ecosystems could be a prime example.

Also--this might sound off-topic but it's not--this photo makes me think of how the top half of the photo resembles the Dominican Republic, the bottom half Haiti. The Haitians were required to deforest their own country to pay the "independence debt" France imposed on them to compensate for the loss of their enslaved labor. I encourage anyone who's interested to sign on to support reparations to Haiti for this debt.
