Right now, the 11th International Degrowth Conference and the 18th Conference of the International Society for Ecological Economics are being held right now in Oslo, Norway. The Conference runs from June 24th - June 27th.
You can find out more about the conference here at the ISEE Home Page and even watch a live stream of the conference.
The conference may seem small, but there over 1,000 people attending, up from about 500 people at last year’s conference in Pontevedra, Spain. Maybe that growth will continue next year.
You don’t have to go to Europe to talk about degrowth with a couple hundred people. In less than a month, people will be descending on Chicago to attend DeSchool 2025 hosted by the US based Degrowth Institute. I’ll be there if you want to say hi. Next year, The U.S. Society for Ecological Economics will hold their 13th Biennial Conference .
If you want to find degrowthers near you gathering in the hundreds, check out the Conferences tab of the Degrowth Database, here. Check out the Groups tab for smaller groups of folks near you who are advancing the degrowth movement.
If you haven’t already, I encourage you to check out some of the organizations that helped put on the conference. Here they are: Research and Degrowth, Degrowth.info, European Society for Ecological Economics, Universidad de Vigo, and the Post-Growth Innovation Lab.
We have to build the community first
The degrowth world is growing. More and more people are understanding that the current system doesn’t work. But that community will need to be built and the groups that make it up will need to learn how to collaborate and mobilize in order to move the world to a more sustainable post-growth path. So go out there and find some other degrowth people to mobilize with.
And who knows, in the not-too-distant future, I might see you at a degrowth conference.
Thank you for being there.
Thank you for sharing, I didn't know the degrowth community is growing this fast
