Welcome to Degrowth is the Answer
Hey everybody,
Welcome to this Substack on degrowth. Thanks for coming.
What I want to do here is build a place for people to both learn about degrowth and apply a degrowth point of view to the world that we live in. We are in a perilous place as a society and a civilization, and I see degrowth as one of the tools we can use to get ourselves out of the hole we have dug ourselves. I see degrowth as the answer to the question of what path can we take to save our civilization, but degrowth is not the promise of utopia. There is no such thing.
I am starting this Substack because, in my own degrowth journey, I have looked for resources like this. For years there wasn’t much out there. But that is changing.
Thank you to the leaders in the degrowth world who have been thinking about these things and writing about degrowth for years. They have built a great foundation for these discussions. I plan on devoting a blog early on to these degrowth pioneers so that anyone who comes here can have a great resource of other places to find important and informed degrowth voices. Maybe that’s a bad idea to declare yourself a source for degrowth and then immediately send people away to other places. But that is what I’ll do.
I’m a firm believer in taking in multiple points of view before forming my own opinions, so if you are interested in degrowth, I encourage you to seek out multiple points of view. I am not the only person who is writing about this, and I certainly don’t know everything.
I hope this can become a place where people come to learn and share what they know as well. I’m looking forward to contributing to the global degrowth community and hopefully build a little community here.
My plan is to post something that reflects on our world through a degrowth lens on Mondays, and something that is more educational in nature on Wednesdays. Then each Friday I plan to post something that is thought-provoking to lead into the discussion on Monday. That’s the plan anyway. I’m sure it will change and evolve as needed.
I look forward to feedback from you to tell me if this is working or not, or if there are things you want me to discuss. I’m happy to go where the community wants/needs me to go.
Take care,
Matt
