This year, more than half of the world’s population will go to the polls to vote. The contest here in the United States is only three months away, so I thought I would ask you a simple question I’ll be writing about tomorrow.
I know the most likely answer is somewhere between these two choices, so I took that easy answer away.
Do you feel that you are governed more, or ruled more? Results and discussion tomorrow.
I chose ruled because it feels like government in the US doesn’t really accomplish that much for the people. Irrespective of the party in power the results are generally similar and the overall objective is the same; keep power for the social and economic elites intact. I am visiting Italy now and my wife asked our tour guide about the government in Italy and he expressed a similar comment. Frustration that no matter the party in power it’s always about them staying in power and undoing whatever so called progress the last administration made. It seemed very consistent with how things are operating in the US. So I choose rules because people don’t seem to be improving their standard of living and the government doesn’t seem to be focused on making that better. I do believe that with another Trump term we will see this more in full display without any of the subtleties of the recent past administrations. But at its core it will still be much of the same.
Although I feel there are very few rules that oppress my personal freedoms, I think we do fall somewhere in-between these two choices. However, if Trump wins a second term, I can see an authoritarian set of rules running this country in a way never before experienced.
